Locum GP – Correctional Health, Darwin NT

A unique locum opportunity where your skills make a lasting difference

At Prescript Recruitment, we specialise in connecting doctors with work that matters. Every placement we make contributes to our mission of addressing Australia’s regional doctor shortage, ensuring that communities across the country have access to the healthcare they deserve.

This opportunity places you at the heart of that mission. As a Locum GP at Darwin Correctional Centre, you will deliver essential healthcare to inmates while experiencing the culture, climate, and lifestyle that makes the Northern Territory such a special part of Australia. This is an opportunity to step into a role that goes beyond day-to-day medicine, offering the chance to make a real social impact while gaining valuable experience in an environment that is both unique and professionally rewarding.

The Position

We are seeking a Locum GP to provide primary care services at Darwin Correctional Centre. This is a varied and impactful role where your clinical expertise will support a vulnerable population, while your leadership will help guide the onsite health team.

Your responsibilities will include providing direct patient care, offering clinical leadership to nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners, and contributing to the delivery of mental health, alcohol and other drugs programmes. You will also play a key role in responding to medical emergencies and assisting with medical evacuations where required. In addition to your clinical duties, you will have the opportunity to mentor and upskill healthcare staff, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement within the team.

This is an opportunity to broaden your clinical experience while delivering care in a setting where every consultation directly contributes to improving access to quality healthcare.

Dates Available

This role commences from 31 March 2025, with placements available on an ongoing basis throughout 2025. A minimum commitment of three weeks is required.

Benefits Provided

This locum opportunity offers a daily rate of $2000 + GST.

All travel expenses are covered, including return economy flights from anywhere in Australia. Accommodation will be provided, along with a hire car for the duration of your placement.

Importantly, this is a Monday to Friday role, with no requirement to cover emergency, on-call, weekend or public holiday shifts.

As always, Prescript provides full concierge-level support, managing all logistics, credentialing and paperwork on your behalf, so you can focus entirely on your clinical work.

What We Require From You

To be considered for this role, you must hold current AHPRA Registration and Fellowship of either the RACGP or ACRRM. We may also consider non-specialist GPs with suitable experience.

Applicants must also be permanent residents, Australian citizens or hold a valid work visa.

Current certification in REST, ALS, ALS2 or APLS is required.

A current NT Police Check will also be required, however this can be organised for you once your placement is confirmed.

Previous correctional health experience is highly regarded but not essential — we welcome doctors who are keen to bring their skills into a new and rewarding environment.

Why This Role Matters

Correctional facilities are often overlooked when it comes to healthcare access, but the need for quality medical care within these settings is critical. Many inmates enter prison with complex, chronic, and untreated health issues, creating a significant gap in care. Your work will directly address that gap, improving both individual health outcomes and broader public health within the correctional system.

At Prescript, we exist to bridge the gap in regional healthcare, and we are proud to support doctors who share our commitment to improving access for all Australians, no matter where they are. With our specialist expertise in regional recruitment and our concierge-level service, we will ensure you are fully supported every step of the way — before, during and after your placement.

Your Next Steps

If you are interested in this opportunity or would like to learn more, please contact Ken Smith, Senior Recruitment Partner at Prescript Recruitment.

Ken can be reached on 0433 701 212 or via email at ken@prescript.com.au.

We look forward to helping you take the next step in your career and ensuring you are perfectly placed for this meaningful role.

About Paul Tillman

As Prescripts Senior Recruitment Partner for non-specialist doctors, I am passionate about building close relationships with both the doctors and health services I work with. I always aim to provide a personal and tailored service and will strive to find the best opportunities for doctors based on their needs and goals and, in turn, provide health services with the best fit for the vacancies they have.

Having worked in medical recruitment for over five years, I have a great understanding of the roles available and the challenges health services face in finding staff for their vacancies.

Prior to working in medical recruitment, I was a Registered Nurse and worked in the UK as a Respiratory HDU Nurse for NHS trusts. This means I have a great insight into the challenges of working clinically and always try to consider this in my work.

I am currently studying Nursing again to allow me the opportunity to return to some clinical work in Australia. My family and I moved to Melbourne from the UK over five years ago, and I enjoy travelling and exploring Australia whenever I can, as well as getting back home to visit family in the UK.

My passions are spending time with friends and family, including my dog Ted, eating and drinking out, enjoying the Australian weather (when Melbourne allows), and sports – most of all football (or soccer, as I am often told).

I always have time for a chat and a joke with health services and doctors alike and look forward to building new connections at Prescript.

About Mel Houston

Hi, I'm Melissa Houston; I am one of the Senior Recruitment Partners at Prescript Recruitment, working with rural generalists and emergency medicine doctors across metro and regional Australia.

My experience covers over a decade of medical recruitment, specialising in senior doctors and solving the healthcare shortage.

I am an expert in working closely with hospitals, departments, and clinics to fill their critical vacancies. My success has included roster management, executive search projects and in-depth relationship building with locum doctors.

I love to work hard whilst injecting humour and fun into my day-to-day activities. I really enjoy meeting clients and doctors; as it stands, I think I've ticked off 100 hospitals that I have visited, and that is probably only touching the surface. I believe it's integral to matching doctors’ and clients’ needs and helps me better understand doctors' new roles.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my daughter and family. I'm a water baby at heart, so you'll often find me out on our family boat - sailing the beautiful waters of the Mornington Peninsula (where I live!).

Next Steps with Prescript

At Prescript Recruitment, we follow a transparent, friendly process:

◼️ The first stage is an informal conversation with Prescript for you to decide if you want to proceed – you will need to share your CV and we will talk about the position, the healthcare organisation, and the location. You can let us know if you want to bring your family and if you have any special requirements.

◼️ The second stage is an informal application – we will arrange a phone call or a review of your skills to establish if this is going to be a good fit.

◼️ The third stage – if you’re happy then Prescript will send you a locum confirmation to say ‘congratulations – all booked!’

◼️ The fourth stage – Prescript will help manage all the paperwork and logistics. All you have to do is look forward to starting.
