A rare executive medical leadership role in one of Australia’s most lifestyle-rich regions. Prescript Recruitment is partnering with the Department of Health Tasmania to appoint an experienced Executive Director Medical Services (EDMS) for the North West region.
This is a high-impact senior leadership opportunity for a doctor who wants to influence care at both hospital and system level. You will join the hospital executive team and play a central role in shaping clinical governance, medical workforce strategy, quality and safety, patient flow, and the delivery of high-quality care across two key hospital sites.
For an experienced medical leader, this role offers the combination that is often hard to find: meaningful executive influence, a strong remuneration package, genuine regional impact, and the lifestyle benefits of living in Tasmania’s North West.
The Role
As Executive Director Medical Services, you will provide senior medical leadership across the North West health service, working closely with the executive team, Clinical Directors, medical workforce, and multidisciplinary teams.
Your focus will include:
Leading clinical governance, quality and safety across the service
Supporting the strategic direction of the medical workforce
Driving continuous improvement across local and statewide services
Working collaboratively with Clinical Directors and senior hospital leaders
Supporting patient flow, operational performance, and system-wide efficiency
Contributing to a culture of safe, sustainable and patient-centred care
This role will suit a strategic, credible and collaborative medical leader who understands the complexity of hospital systems and can bring people together around shared clinical and operational priorities.
The Health Service
The Department of Health – North West services a population of approximately 116,000 people and operates across two major sites:
North West Regional Hospital – Burnie
Mersey Community Hospital – Latrobe, near Devonport
Services across the region include:
Busy Emergency and General Medicine departments at both sites
Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics, primarily at North West Regional Hospital
General Surgery at North West Regional Hospital

Rehabilitation services at Mersey Community Hospital
North West Cancer Centre, linked to Launceston
Extensive onsite pathology, imaging and pharmacy services
This is a dynamic regional health service with real breadth, complexity and community importance. The EDMS will have the opportunity to contribute to both day-to-day executive leadership and longer-term service improvement.
Why North West Tasmania?
Tasmania’s North West offers a rare balance of professional challenge and personal lifestyle.
You will be working in a region known for its coastline, national parks, food, wine, community feel and easy access to the mainland. Devonport to Melbourne is less than one hour by air, while the local region offers excellent amenities, strong community connections and a more manageable pace of life.
For doctors relocating with family, North West Tasmania also offers a range of well-regarded public and private schooling options across primary and secondary education, with supportive pathways for families making the move.
