A significant medical leadership opportunity in Tasmania.

For an experienced DMS, Deputy DMS or senior medical administrator considering their next leadership move, this is an opportunity to join the executive team of one of Tasmania's major teaching and referral hospitals and play an important role in clinical governance, medical workforce leadership and the ongoing development of healthcare across the North and North-West.

If you expressed interest in this position during the previous recruitment campaign, we would encourage you to speak with Prescript again. Nadine Onto would be very happy to have a confidential conversation about the role, where the recruitment process now sits, and whether it may be the right next step for you.

About Launceston General Hospital

Launceston General Hospital is an accredited 450-bed teaching hospital and the major referral centre for Tasmania's North and North-West regions.

With more than 2,300 staff, LGH provides emergency, acute, specialist, inpatient and ambulatory services to communities across northern Tasmania.

The hospital has strong academic and research links with the University of Tasmania across Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health and Pharmacy, alongside local support for research, clinical education and advanced medical equipment through the Clifford Craig Foundation.

For a medical executive, this is a role with genuine scope to influence systems, support clinicians and help shape the delivery of healthcare across an important regional network.

The role

As Deputy Executive Director Medical Services, you will work closely with the EDMS and broader executive team, providing senior medical leadership across the organisation.

The position will suit a medical leader who brings sound judgement, credibility with clinicians and a strong understanding of clinical governance, workforce and health service operations.

Key areas of focus will include:

  • Medical leadership and professional governance

  • Clinical quality, safety and accountability

  • Medical workforce planning and development

  • Supporting effective relationships between clinicians and executive leadership

  • Contributing to hospital strategy and service improvement

  • Supporting a culture of respect, professionalism and continuous improvement

The appointment is full-time for two years, up to 76 hours per fortnight, with on-call responsibilities. Flexible working arrangements may be negotiable.

Remuneration and benefits

The remuneration package reflects the seniority of the appointment:

$222,789 - $319,701 p.a. pro rata + 12% superannuation

Additional benefits include:

  • Fully maintained private-plated motor vehicle or $30,254 p.a. vehicle allowance

  • Participation in the Private Practice Scheme (35%) or allowance in lieu

  • Access to the Fitness Passport program for you and your family across 40+ facilities statewide

Why Launceston?

A senior executive move should work professionally and personally.

Launceston offers the professional challenge of working within a major regional referral and teaching hospital, without requiring you to give up the lifestyle advantages that bring so many people to Tasmania.

The city sits at the gateway to the Tamar Valley and northern Tasmania, with excellent food and wine, beautiful countryside, Cataract Gorge on the edge of the city and easy access to some of Tasmania's most recognised natural landscapes.

For the right medical leader, it offers the opportunity to do meaningful work at scale while building a life outside the hospital that looks very different from the larger mainland capitals.

Who should consider the role?

Highly regarded

  • Fellowship of RACMA / AFRACMA, or actively working towards Fellowship

  • Postgraduate qualifications in health management

  • Significant experience in medical administration, clinical governance or senior medical leadership

You may already be working as a DMS or Deputy DMS. Equally, you may be an experienced senior medical leader considering your first move into a larger executive appointment.

If you are unsure whether your background aligns closely enough, speak with Nadine.

Your next steps

A confidential conversation with Nadine can help you understand the opportunity and how it compares with other DMS and medical executive roles currently available.

And if Launceston is not quite right, that conversation is still worth having.

Prescript works with DMS' and senior medical leaders across interim, locum and permanent appointments, providing career guidance and tailored support throughout the process.
