Mornington Island Hospital is seeking an experienced Rural Generalist for three upcoming locum blocks in October and November.
This is a genuine remote, single-doctor hospital role, combining emergency and acute inpatient medicine and providing an opportunity to work closely with a predominantly Aboriginal island community.
Higher rates apply for doctors with a relevant Advanced Skill Training qualification.

About Mornington Island
Mornington Island sits in the Gulf of Carpentaria in remote north-west Queensland, with the township of Gununa forming the main community on the island.
It is home to a strong Aboriginal community, with around 80% of residents identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander at the most recent Census.
For a Rural Generalist, this is an opportunity to experience medicine well beyond a conventional regional hospital setting. You’ll become an important part of a small remote health service, caring for patients across emergency and inpatient medicine and working within a community where reliable access to experienced doctors really matters.
Mornington Island Hospital operates 24 hours a day and provides acute inpatient and emergency care for the local community.
The role
You’ll be working as the Rural Generalist at a genuine single-doctor site, with:
08:00–18:00 rostered hours
18:00–08:00 on call
4 Emergency Department beds
7 ward beds
24-hour acute inpatient and emergency care
Broad Rural Generalist exposure across emergency and inpatient medicine
My Emergency Doctor remote support from 22:00–08:00
It’s a role for a doctor who is comfortable practising with autonomy and enjoys using the breadth of their Rural Generalist skills.

FRACGP, FRACGP-RG or FACRRM
Current AHPRA registration
Experience appropriate for a remote single-doctor hospital
Confidence across emergency and acute inpatient medicine
Ability to undertake the roster and overnight on-call requirements
Completion of required credentialing
