Broad-scope rural hospital medicine in Esperance

$2,600/Day

Broad-scope rural hospital medicine in Esperance, with inpatient responsibility, senior ED support and multiple locum blocks available through to Christmas and New Year.

The Opportunity

If you enjoy the breadth of rural hospital medicine and want a role where your experience genuinely matters across the service, Esperance is well worth considering.

Prescript is seeking an experienced Rural Generalist, GP/ED doctor or senior hospital practitioner to work as a Ward Practitioner at Esperance Health Campus in Western Australia.

You will take responsibility for inpatient ward care as the admitting clinician, complete morning ward rounds and provide senior clinical support to the Emergency Department as required.

It is a good fit for doctors who enjoy working across the interface between general medicine, inpatient care and Emergency Medicine, rather than being confined to one narrow area of practice.

Dates Available

September / October

  • 28 September to 4 October 2026

  • 5 to 11 October 2026

November

  • 2 to 8 November 2026

December / January

  • 7 to 13 December 2026

  • 21 December 2026 to 3 January 2027

The Christmas and New Year block is likely to be particularly attractive for doctors looking to combine a substantial locum with time on WA's south coast.

The Role

You will work as the senior Ward Practitioner, with responsibilities including:

  • Inpatient assessment and management

  • Acting as the admitting clinician

  • Morning ward rounds

  • Senior clinical support to the Emergency Department

  • Working collaboratively with nursing, ED and other hospital teams

  • Participating in the on-call roster as required

Ward rounds are generally 8am to 12pm, with on-call responsibilities around the broader service.

Why Esperance?

Esperance Health Campus is a significant regional service providing 24-hour Emergency care alongside acute medical, surgical, maternity and specialist services. Its ED includes 12 treatment areas and two resuscitation bays, while the hospital also has operating theatre and obstetric capability.

That gives the role genuine clinical variety and makes it particularly suitable for doctors who enjoy broad-scope rural medicine.

And then there is Esperance itself.

Located on WA's south coast, the region is renowned for its white-sand beaches, turquoise water and dramatic coastline. The local Great Ocean Drive takes in beaches, rocky headlands, bays and ocean pools within easy reach of town.

For the December and January placement in particular, it is a rare opportunity to combine meaningful rural medicine with a summer stay in one of Western Australia's most distinctive coastal locations.

Remuneration

  • $2,600 per day

  • Christmas loading rates to be confirmed

  • Travel and accommodation support available

What We Require

This role would suit an experienced:

  • Rural Generalist

  • GP with substantial hospital and ED experience

  • ED SMO

  • Ward / hospital SMO

You will need:

  • Current AHPRA registration

  • Recent inpatient hospital experience

  • Appropriate Emergency Medicine experience

  • Confidence managing admissions and ward patients

  • Ability to participate in on-call

Why This One Stands Out

$2,600 per day for genuine broad-scope rural hospital medicine in Esperance.

Rather than a pure ED or GP clinic locum, this role gives you responsibility across the inpatient service while remaining connected to the Emergency Department.

For doctors who enjoy the variety and autonomy of rural medicine, that combination can be particularly rewarding.

And if you can cover the 21 December to 3 January block, you could spend Christmas and New Year working in one of WA's most sought-after coastal regions.
