6 Tips For Starting Out As A Locum

6 Tips.png

Ever Thought Of Locum Work?

Prescript is perfectly placed to help you find the best jobs available across Australia. Here are a few handy hints to help you get your ideal locum position as quickly as possible:

1. Update Your CV

Make sure you send us an up to date copy of your CV including details of your most recent place of work and any relevant experience to the type of locum work that you are looking for.

Don’t have time or don’t know where to start? Prescript are experts at creating professional and relevant CVs and would be happy to help you with this.

2. Prime Your Referees

Before we can put you forward for a locum position, we will need to obtain at least two, preferably three, references from consultants that you’ve worked with over the past year. If you’ve worked in more than one speciality over the past year, your most recent supervisor and/or supervisors from the speciality that you want to work as a locum in will be the best to use. Please don’t forget to let your referees know that they’ll be contacted by us for references. In our experience, the best references always come from people who knew that they were going to be used as a referee and knew that we were going to call!

3. Organising Your Paperwork

Paperwork and credentialing requirements vary from hospital to hospital (even within the same health district), and generally, you will have to re-submit paperwork to each new hospital that you work at as a locum (yes, even within the same health district!). Some of this paperwork will need to be tackled on a case by case basis but to make your life easier, get hold of the following now as a minimum:

✔️ Qualifications - Primary Degree and Fellowship

✔️ Copy of driving licence and passport

✔️ AHPRA registration

✔️ Evidence of vaccination against; HIV; Hepatitis B; Hepatitis C; Measles, Mumps & Rubella; Varicella; dTpa; as well as evidence of any TB screening, if applicable *

✔️ Your indemnity insurance certificate *

✔️ A national police check dated within the past three years *

✔️ Any Working With Children Checks (WWCC) that you currently hold (additional checks may be required if you take up a locum assignment in a new state/territory) *

*These are dependent on where you work - talk to Prescript for more information.

Prescript has its own quality standards, called PQS - find out more here.

4. Be Ready For More Paperwork Coming Your Way

With every new locum placement, comes a new credentialing requirement. Having access to a printer and scanner is invaluable. Prescript is also a big fan of electronic signatures and using your mobile phone as a scanner, and we will gladly share our tips and tricks with you to make life easier.

5. Get An Australian Business Number (ABN)

Depending on the hospital that you work at as a locum, you may have the option to invoice as a contractor rather than be paid via the hospital payroll. To do this, you will need your own ABN, which is free of charge and can be done online via the Australian Business Register.

6. Check Your Diary

Look at your schedule and decide when you are going to be available for locum work, taking into account adequate rest days between shifts as well as travel time to/from your locum assignment if it’s interstate. Like the sound of a particular job but not sure of the logistics of how to get there? Prescript can talk you through the best itineraries (as well as suggest things to see and do when you’re not at work!)

O&G and Medicine Recruitment Partner | Prescript's Interview with Marcia Beere

Prescript - 2018 Feb_22635 crop long .jpg

Hi, I'm Grace Clueit, I look after Vacancies, Marketing and Communications at Prescript Recruitment. I spoke with Marcia Beere to get the inside info on her role as Recruitment Partner at Prescript. I found out more about her experience and how she plays a leading role in helping O&G and Medicine doctors with the next step in their careers.

Marcia recruits for locum and permanent positions across regional Australia with a focus on Medicine and O&G. Marcia has worked in medical recruitment for ten years, in both hospital and agency settings.

What path did you take to get to Medical Recruitment Partner?

Marcia: New Zealand born, following a typical overseas experience in the UK, I moved back to Australia in the early 2000's and quickly established myself into a medical administration role via a temping agency. At the time the hospital was short-staffed and needed someone who had the ability to look at a problem and fix it. I enjoyed the problem-solving side of it and found being part of the candidate pathway from junior to consultant very fulfilling. I love being able to provide that strong support during critical points in peoples lives.

Being able to help hospitals stay fully-staffed and helping meet that community demand was my primary motivation to get into the full recruitment side. I also love the people contact. It’s so rewarding listening to the needs of both candidates and clients, tailoring positions to suit individual needs, and then being able to bring it all together.

What do you see as big issues within medical recruitment right now?

The biggest issue that we are helping to solve is the shortage in regional areas. It’s a consistent problem across the whole of Australia, excluding Sydney and Melbourne, and it is why we exist as an agency. Living in a regional area myself, I have seen the impact of the doctor shortage. It is continually challenging for hospital networks and I feel very privileged to be able to provide support and energy in addressing some of these challenges.

rudi-strydom-3768-unsplash.jpg
What are you doing differently for O&G and Medicine doctors?

I'm very specific in my approach and ensure I take the time to find the right roles to suit the right people, specifically avoiding the ‘one size fits all’ approach. I instead opt to spend more time making sure everything has been done properly and to the highest standard.

Quality over quantity is definitely something I focus on. As a company we won’t just partner with ‘anyone’ and we take our time to provide a bespoke, personalised service. The proof is in the meaningful, long term relationships that we’ve created with both candidates and clients alike.

Did you know…?

Marcia lives in Bega, the rural heartland of the Sapphire Coast, and also the home of Bega Cheese! When she’s not helping rural hospitals find the doctors that they need, she’s looking after her family and working on the farm with her cows, what a woman!

stijn-te-strake-316914-unsplash.jpg

You’ve been working in medical recruitment for a long time now, do you have any predictions for the future careers of doctors in Australia?

While working in health care facilities, we would look forward to a tsunami of doctors to flood through our hospitals. For whatever reason, we’re not seeing these extra doctors translate into extra staff, at least not in the regional areas where the demand is increasing. I am a tree-changer who moved from the city to the fields of a regional centre and I am not unique in this change. Many people are choosing to relocate away from the hustle and bustle of a city and enjoy what the regional centres have to offer. It is great to be able to help grow the services by placing doctors in some of these areas.

This is something where there isn’t just one simple fix and the problem isn’t going to go away anytime soon. Having more medical graduates is one factor in reducing the shortage of doctors of course but there are other factors too. Many of these graduates will end up as specialists in cities and working in private practices but that doesn’t help with the shortage in public sectors in regional areas

What do you enjoy / what frustrations do you have about your role?

I enjoy having long term relationships with people and really getting to know them – both doctors and clients. Seeing doctors progress through their career and working with clients for such long periods of time is great. I don’t think that I’d have the same kind of ongoing relationships if I were working in a different industry.

Knowing that I work for a passionate company, who wants to make a difference is an amazing feeling and is truly demonstrated through our interactions with candidates and clients. I continue to enjoy the field that I have invested a lot of time into and being able to carry that on is a real honour.

One frustration I tend to encounter is dealing with bureaucracy and working within not one, but multiple public health systems that all have their own idiosyncrasies. For example, if you are credentialed to work full time in one state health service, that doesn’t mean you are credentialed to work as a locum in that same state health service, and instead need to almost start as if the candidate is a brand-new person within the system.

This is one of the wider frustrations of working within health – everyone feels it. It is, however, something that is there for a positive reason and it’s important that these procedures are in place to protect doctors and hospitals.

Hospitals - Meet your Recruitment Partner for O&G and Medicine Consultants

LINKEDIN FRIENDLY IMAGES (76).png

Hello!

For those of you that don’t know me, I’m Marcia Beere – Recruitment Partner for O&G and Medicine Consultants at Prescript Recruitment. I work with regional hospitals across Australia to help solve the doctor shortage.

I thought I would share some information about myself so that you can learn a little bit more about my background and my interest in medical recruitment.

With having 10-years of experience in medical admin (and currently living in Brogo, just north of Bega, NSW), it’s safe to say I can relate to many of the difficulties you’re facing within the regional doctor shortage.

“The biggest issue that we are helping to solve is the doctor shortage in regional areas. It’s a consistent problem across the whole of Australia, excluding Sydney and Melbourne, and it is why we exist as an agency. Living in a regional area myself, I have seen the impact of the doctor shortage.”
rudi-strydom-3768-unsplash.jpg

Born in NZ, I moved to Australia in the early 2000's and quickly established myself into a medical administration role. I enjoyed the problem-solving side of it and found being part of the doctor’s career pathway from a Junior, through Registrar to Consultant-level very rewarding.

Being able to help regional hospitals stay fully-staffed was my primary motivation to join Prescript Recruitment earlier this year. I get to work from my home office with the full support and back-up from the team in our Sydney HQ.

If you need my support for your locum, fixed-term and ongoing positions, I’d love to hear from you.

My Sea Change (and why you should do the same)

Prescript - Darlinghurst27348 crop long .jpg

At Prescript we are often helping Radiologists to find new permanent roles which require them to move from one part of Australia to another.  It can often be a daunting decision to step away from your comfort zone and take a leap into the unknown.  I can speak from experience as in February 2018, after 17 years of living in Sydney, I packed up and moved 800km north to Northern NSW – away from everyone and everything I knew.  This was one of the biggest and riskiest decisions I’ve ever made in life, but also the best.

On the surface things looked great for me - I had been doing really well in my career, was living a fortunate life in Bondi and had a great support network, however, I knew deep down that Sydney wasn’t working for me anymore.  I was constantly stressed, flat, tired and felt unenthused; and life just seemed to be continuously throwing obstacles my way.  I craved a healthy lifestyle, nature and calm living that the city couldn't provide.  I wanted out of Sydney, and my partner had always dreamt of living in Northern NSW, so we made the call to get out of the rut and get energised by life again.

We live about half way between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay so there is so much to explore on our days off.  The Byron region is one we’ve got to know very well over the years, with our annual week-long trip to Bluesfest, so it was a given that we’d love it there.  However, neither of us expected how pleasantly surprised we’d be from the hidden gems within the Gold Coast and Tweed regions.  Our perceptions couldn’t have been more wrong thinking they were soulless regions full of theme parks, super-centres and drinking venues.  Instead, we have found gorgeous National Parks, spectacular scenic drives, delicious culinary experiences, eclectic community markets, stunning estuaries and endless immaculate beaches on our doorstep.  And we know there’s still so much more to discover.

It’s now been six months since we first made the move and I could not have dreamt that it would be so positive for both myself and my partner.  I’ve gone from having obstacle after obstacle in Sydney over the past few years to suddenly having a life where everything has just fallen into place.  It was a huge risk to move to somewhere new, so far away from our family & friends, where we knew no one, I had no job, and my partner had a start-up business.  But life seems always to have a funny way of making things work out if you stop fighting against it and just go with the flow.   Because I took the leap, I am now happier, healthier, more energised and focused.  I’m back in a job that I enjoy, can work from my home office without a painful commute and have a great supportive team only a video chat away.  My relationship with my partner has been renewed, and we love our adventures exploring the region.  Sydney and my hometown of Wollongong are only an hour’s flight away to see friends.  And for the first time in years, I love coming home.

Because I took the leap, I am now happier, healthier, more energised and focused.
