How To Apply For A Medicare Provider Number Online

Marcia Medicare.png

I’m Marcia Beere, Prescript’s Credentialing and Recruitment Partner. I work with regional hospitals and practices across Australia to ensure doctors start on time. I aim to provide the highest standards with credentialing, customer service, and recruitment processes.

Obtaining provider numbers is a crucial step for most doctors that we work with. A provider number is a unique number issued to eligible doctors for each health service address you work in.

You can’t claim a Medicare benefit until you have a provider number issued for that location. Some of our doctors have lists and lists of provider numbers for all the various places they have worked!

Often provider numbers are needed quickly and on very short notice. This is where PRODA comes in.

What Is PRODA?

PRODA is an online Medicare system that allows you to generate provider numbers without all the paperwork and the best part about it? It is instant! We encourage all of our Prescript doctors to set up accounts, and we are more than happy to help talk you through the process.

Some quick but essential facts:

You can only register one PRODA account in your name.

Your individual PRODA account belongs to you and only you.

Your account doesn’t expire, so you’ll keep the same account even if you change employer (it is, therefore, best to use your personal email address and contact details in case of changes further down the line).

You can add trusted contacts to your account with something called an “RA Number”. This can provide others with limited access to your account and in a secure way. This is helpful because Prescript can generate provider numbers on your behalf.

What Do You Need To Do?

Follow this step by step guide to obtain additional location provider numbers instantly:

Firstly: You will need to register with PRODA

To register, click on this link here

A web page will open with a detailed process of your next steps

Create your login details and personal details

Verify your identity. You will need three pieces of identification (Passport, Driver’s Licence and Medicare card are easiest to verify, but alternative ID is accepted)

Match your existing services to your profile

Secondly: Apply instantly for provider numbers – you can apply or even better, we can do it for you!

Once you have registered, you will then be able to apply instantly online

More good news – we can apply on your behalf! Once you have an account set up, you can link it to ours, and we can securely apply for provider numbers for you

Need help registering an account? I am happy to talk through the process over the phone - 1300 755 498.

PRODA also have a very helpful team who can assist with more technical queries. Their number is 1800 700 199, or you can email proda@servicesaustralia.gov.au

What Does PQS Stand For?

PQS July 2021.png

I’m Stef McLaughlin, Prescript’s Operations, Leadership & Giving Manager. I wanted to give you an overview of PQS and what it means for doctors and hospitals.

Prescript takes great pride in representing our doctors across Australia, NZ and globally. We work with a mix of hospitals, clinics and private practices.

I know that paperwork can be time-consuming and often tedious. We want working with Prescript to be straightforward for both the doctor and for the health service.

Each Australian health service is unique. That means that different checks and paperwork are required for each location/health service we work with. Often the paperwork requested overlaps – understandably, this can be a significant cause of frustration for some of our doctors!

Because of this, I introduced PQS (Prescript Quality Standards). This is a set of paperwork standards and background checks that we use as a foundation for each doctor we work with. I want everyone we work with to have peace of mind that each Prescript doctor has met a consistent level of checks.

WHAT IS PART OF OUR PQS CHECKLIST?

PQS Prescript Interview Report - with one of our medical recruitment partners

PQS Registered with Prescript as a candidate

PQS Answered disclosure questions

PQS Medical Board Registration checked

PQS Shared a copy of driving licence and passport

PQS Provided proof of qualifications - Primary Degree and Fellowship

PQS CV updated for recent work history

PQS Right to work checked (citizenship and visas)

PQS Google keyword search

PQS Three reference reports (two as a minimum)

WHAT IS NOT PART OF OUR PQS CHECKLIST?

[These can be location specific and requested by the health service]

 Working with children checks

 Police clearance reports

 Immunisation/vaccination evidence

Since implementing PQS, it has made everyone’s life easier. Our doctors can rely on PQS to help their applications stand out, as well as minimise duplication of paperwork.

Why Our Goal Of One Million Days Water Is More Important Than Ever

LinkedIn Friendly - Job ad format and general (54).png

We have seen the recent news that the Tigray region of Ethiopia has been subject to some harrowing events. The area has been facing a humanitarian crisis, due to the armed conflict, with thousands of people killed and millions displaced.

Tigray has been close to Prescript Recruitment’s heart as it is the location for our giving goal – providing one million days of clean water for families.  This giving is linked to our everyday business activities  - every time we help a doctor in Australia with the next step in their career or help a regional hospital, we give towards our giving goal.

We chose Tigray as the focus for our giving as not having clean water is a solvable problem that reaps enormous benefits. Our giving contributes to the construction of hand-dug wells, reducing disease and giving reliability to communities.  It is devasting to see so much of this good work unpicked by brutal violence. The lasts news is that thousands of wells and water sources have been deliberately damaged or destroyed.

Prescript is determined to reach and exceed our million days of water target – contributing to new infrastructure and restoring damaged wells.

The good news is that projects have continued to run during the unrest. Donations will assist with the restoration of damaged water supplies to 20 villages to provide water for 3,600 people. This will be a tiny start to an extensive program. It is estimated that 60% of the 11,250 water supply schemes (including over 7,000 wells) in Tigray are now non-functioning because they have been damaged as a result of the conflict.

We link our day to day business activities to our giving goal of providing families access to clean water in rural Ethiopia.

What's Next?

Lives depend on the restoration of the water supplies, and I am so proud that we are making an incredible impact on this. We link our day to day business activities to our giving goal. For example:

When a hospital or practice confirms a doctor in a locum or permanent position in regional Australia

When a doctor refers another doctor to us

When a doctor registers as a new candidate with Prescript

When a doctor completes a reference for another doctor

When a hospital or practice agrees to work with Prescript on a long-term vacancy

Being a Business for Good

All this has been made possible by our membership of the Global Business Giving Initiative Buy1Give1 (B1G1). It means your choice to work with Prescript ensures something great happens in the world and saves lives as well.

B1G1 is a social enterprise and non-profit organisation with a mission to create a world full of giving. Unlike conventional giving models, B1G1 helps small and medium-sized businesses achieve more social impact by embedding giving activities into everyday business operations and creating unique giving stories. Every business transaction (and as a result, the business’ day-to-day activity) can impact lives.

Watch the video above to see an example of how people access water in Ethiopia. It made me realise exactly what a difference we can make to communities such as these.

Prescript’s Giving Update – 300,000 Days of Water Reached!

LinkedIn Friendly - Job ad format and general (49).png
Three hundred thousand days of access to safe drinking water for rural communities in Ethiopia.

★ We have reached an incredible milestone towards our giving goal of one million days!

★ This is another enormous step towards our giving goal, and it feels incredible to be able to give back to those communities that need it the most.

★ For 2021 and beyond, our giving goal is to provide 1 million days of access to clean water to families living in poverty in rural Ethiopia.

★ It is with thanks to our doctors, hospitals and practices who have made this happen.

We link our day to day business activities to our giving goal of providing families access to clean water in rural Ethiopia.

Hand-dug Wells In Ethiopia

The projects we are supporting fund the construction of hand-dug wells in the Ethiopian province of Tigray.

During the current unrest in Tigray, the project areas have continued to run, but thousands of wells and water sources have been deliberately damaged or destroyed.

It is crucial that we help to get these wells back up and running to their previous state. Without a well, women can spend 3 hours every day collecting about 20 litres (for her whole family) of polluted water from sources often shared with livestock.

The whole family benefit from having access to clean water - meals can be prepared earlier, improved sanitary practices also mean less sickness and fewer missed school days.

Our Giving Stories

When the following things happen at Prescript, we give access to life-saving clean water:

➞ When a hospital or practice confirms a doctor in a locum or permanent position in regional Australia

➞ When a doctor refers another doctor to us

➞ When a doctor registers as a new candidate with Prescript

➞ When a doctor completes a reference for another doctor

Doctors - How To Take The Headache Out Of Paperwork

PQS Blog.png

Paperwork! For most people, form filling is not high on their enjoyment list. Neither is trying to navigate the various requirements across different States and health services. That’s where we come in.

At Prescript, our aim is to ensure the highest standards with credentialing, customer service and recruitment processes are adhered to. I want to make life easier for the doctors and clients that we work with.

Any doctor who has worked in more than two locations (and that’s most doctors) will agree that it can be such a pain completing various documents, online checks and making sure everything is still valid in the process. I often have conversations with our doctors about these differing requirements, and I know it is a cause for great frustration.

However, there is some credentialing paperwork that is broadly required across most health services. Because of this, we have created our own checklist - Prescript Quality Standards (PQS).

PQS has three main benefits:

Hospitals, clinics and practices can have peace of mind that each Prescript doctor has met a consistent level of background checks.

Doctors can rely on PQS to help their applications stand out, plus minimise paperwork duplication.

➝   Internally, we use PQS to judge when a doctor is ‘job ready’ - only doctors who have met the Prescript Quality Standards can start in a new position.

Because all of our clients have their own different, yet overlapping, credentialing, we thought it essential that we can rely on our own foundation of standards.

What is part of our PQS checklist?

PQS Prescript Interview Report - with one of our medical recruitment partners

PQS Registered with Prescript as a candidate

PQS Answered disclosure questions

PQS Medical Board Registration checked

PQS Shared a copy of driving licence and passport

PQS Provided proof of qualifications - Primary Degree and Fellowship

PQS CV updated for recent work history

PQS Right to work checked (citizenship and visas)

PQS Google keyword search

PQS Three reference reports (two as a minimum)

What is not part of our PQS checklist?

[These can be location specific and requested by the health service]

 Working with children checks

 Police clearance reports

 Immunisation/vaccination evidence

What Does This Mean For You?

Removing the headache of paperwork is our key driver - doctors can rely on Prescript to keep admin to the minimum, yet at the same time know that we take quality and standards seriously.
