For a Registrar position - You will have 6-12 months of critical care experience either within Emergency, Anaesthetics, Medicine or Intensive Care.

You must also be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia via the Competent Authority pathway (United Kingdom, Canada, United States, New Zealand and Ireland).

6 steps to securing a position in Australia

• Are you a UK trained A&E SHO or Registrar? 
• Interested in a 12 month position in Australia?
• Not sure what happens next?

If you're thinking you want to secure a role for August 2017, then Prescript will need to secure an interview for you within the next few weeks. This means we have to move quickly and start the process as soon as possible. I have listed below the 6 steps needed to secure your dream role of working and living in Australia:
 

1. Prescript will need to assess your eligibility. By registering with Prescript we can discuss the pathways available to you.
2. Once we have assessed your eligibility we can discuss your preferences and the positions most suited to you.
3. After we've established what you are looking for, to submit an application we will need to have your CV and two current references. We will only apply for references when we have your permission.
4. Having submitted your application for a position, we will keep in touch with the hospital to schedule a telephone or Skype interview. This can take a few days or up to a few weeks to organise.
5. After the interview, if the hospital wants to offer you a position we can assist with discussions on salary and additional benefits, e.g. relocation allowance. This process can take a few weeks.
6. Once you've accepted the job offer, things will start to move quite quickly, and you'll need to complete paperwork to ensure you are ready to start your new job in Australia. This includes registration with the Medical Board of Australia and arranging a visa. This whole process can take up to three to four months.

• Emergency Resident Medical Officer needed in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. Base salaries from $68,663 - $101,391 plus superannuation (pension) depending on state and level of experience.
• Emergency Registrar needed in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and regional NSW. Base Salaries from $84,478 - $146,065 plus superannuation (pension) depending on state and level of experience.

6 Tips for Starting Out as a Locum

Ever thought of locum work?

Prescript is perfectly placed to help you find the best jobs available across Australia. Here are a few handy hints to help you get your ideal locum job as quickly as possible:

1)      Update your CV.

Make sure you send us an up to date copy of your CV including details of your most recent place of work and any relevant experience to the type of locum work that you are looking for.

Don’t have time or don’t know where to start? Prescript are experts at creating professional and relevant CVs and would be happy to help you with this.

2)      Prime Your Referees.

Before we can put you forward for a locum position, we will need to obtain at least two, preferably three, references from consultants that you’ve worked with within the past year. If you’ve worked in more than one specialty over the past year, your most recent supervisor and/or supervisors from the specialty that you want to work as a locum in, will be the best to use. Please don’t forget to let your referees know that they’ll be contacted by us for references. In our experience, the best references always come from people who knew that they were going to be used as a referee and knew that we were going to call!

3)      Get Your Paperwork In Order.

Paperwork and credentialing requirements vary from hospital to hospital (even within the same health district) and generally you will have to re-submit paperwork to each new hospital that you work at as a locum (yes, even within the same health district!). Some of this paperwork will need to be tackled on a case by case basis but to make your life easier, get hold of the following now as a minimum:

• Certified copies of your passport (and visa, if applicable) and driver licence

• Certified copy of your primary degree certificate (and fellowship certificate, if you have one)

• A copy of your current, unrestricted general or specialist AHPRA registration

• Your indemnity insurance certificate

• Evidence of vaccination against: HIV; Hepatitis B; Hepatitis C; Measles, Mumps & Rubella; Varicella; dTpa; as well as evidence of any TB screening, if applicable.

• A national police check dated within the past 2 years

• Any Working With Children Checks (WWCC) that you currently hold (additional checks may be required if you take up a locum assignment in a new state/territory)

Documents can be certified by fellow doctors as well as nurses, dentists, pharmacists, lawyers or a justice of the peace (JP).

4)      Get Ready For More Paperwork Coming Your Way!

With every new locum placement comes a new credentialing requirement. Having access to a printer and scanner is invaluable. Prescript is also a big fan of electronic signatures and using your mobile phone as a scanner and we will gladly share our tips and tricks with you to make life easier.

5)      Get an Australian Business Number (ABN). 

Depending on the hospital that you work at as a locum, you may have the option to invoice as a contractor rather than be paid via the hospital payroll. To do this, you will need your own ABN which is free of charge and can be done online via the Australian Business Register.

6)      Check Your Diary.

Look at your schedule and decide when you are going to be available for locum work, taking into account adequate rest days between shifts as well as travel time to/from your locum assignment if it’s interstate. Fresh, local, seasonal. If you like to eat the best of food from the fertile surrounds of the Central Coast, you’re in luck in Coffs.  

The big one is Bellingen Markets, on the third Saturday of every month. Over 250 stall holders pop up to offer the best of fresh produce, artisan products, crafts, live music and lots of other family entertainment. Just half and hours drive south of Coffs, it’s a great day out.

Harbourside Markets, held every Sunday, beside the jetty right in Coffs is another great place to wander, eat, browse the wares made by talented locals.

Pike & Joyce Winery

The vastness of Australia offers a unique opportunity to become a tourist within the country when venturing to other states, cities and towns.  Incredible diversity of landscape, climate, culture and food can be found. Scale means we perhaps don’t know where to start when we’re looking at a few days somewhere and want to make the most of it.

We sampled a few – in the interests of sound research – and drew the conclusion that another few weekends at least, would be needed to thoroughly explore the wonderful, cafes, artisan coffee making, local food proponents and the general great vibe of the many places we whizzed by and added to the ‘next time’ list.

Peel Street Kitchen

Seriously good coffee from a local roaster – Great start. Peel Street has a short, well-balanced breakfast menu written up on a small blackboard each day. Friendly, relaxed staff and a lovely, sunny situation with an industrial yet warm feel.

We sampled the ‘The Fry Up’ – which in fact, was delicately presented with the fried items – eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes; expertly balanced by a generous salad of herbs and leaves in a zesty, preserved lemon dressing.

Of course, it’s always all about the ingredients and The Leg Ham Toastie was pretty perfect. The slabs of good sourdough, thickly sliced ham and quality mustard - then compressed and toasted to just the right crispness was savoury and satisfying.

A very civilised place to go for breakfast, or lunch for that matter, is Art Gallery Food + Wine. Sitting in the lovely Adelaide University campus, as well as attached to the Art Gallery, it offers a tranquil place to sit and dine. Popular dishes for breakfast include the Persian Style Eggs and their list of "Morning Bevvies" are ideal when you need a good quality Bloody Mary with local Kangaroo Island vodka; or a Marmalade Martini which showcases locally made Settlers Gin from McLaren Vale in South Australia.

Back to Peel Street we go – This place really is sensational. Consistent quality, generous, tasty, clean flavours and perfect service – relaxed yet efficient.

The menu is chalked up on the blackboard. The wine selection is carefully thought out and compliments the food. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Peel Street itself is a laneway that shares its namesake restaurant with a number of small bars, cafes and restaurants.

The flavours at the lovely Peel Street kitchen lean towards Asian and Middle Eastern and are perfectly balanced and put together with an artistic eye and a keen palate.

Pike & Joyce Winery

In under an hour from the CBD, after a really scenic drive that winds up into the Adelaide Hills, we arrived at Pike & Joyce, one of the well established and beautifully situated wineries in the region.

The vista, out over the vines and the beautifully set tables set us up for what was certainly a wonderful lunch, accompanied of course with Pike & Joyce wine that we first selected in a tasting that is hosted within the restaurant by the friendly staff.  The emphasis is on good quality, local, seasonal produce, simply prepared and beautifully presented.

Float up in the lift and emerge onto the rooftop of 2KW for an incredible view out over Adelaide and surrounds and a sunset drink and snack.

Gin Long Canteen

Fun vibe, great Asian food delivered with flair by the efficient, friendly staff. Gin Long Canteen is packed but seems to just keep on delivering at high speed and top quality. We chose a selection of small and large plates to share and they were all delicious, generous and well presented.

Sean O’Connell has opened a restaurant/gourmet bistro, Sean's Kitchen, linked to the casino and right by the Conference Centre, river, CBD. The style is cool, stylish, yet casual enough to feel comfortable and relaxed. Something from the freshly shucked oyster bar is a great way to start an evening- paired with a fresh local white wine perhaps?

Sitting under the beautiful vaulted ceiling and taking in the general style is worth a visit in itself.

BEST LOCAL FOOD SHOPPING

Central Market

Bustling, full of produce and local products, this market is a must-visit during an Adelaide trip. It’s a practical, functional market that is large, utilized by locals for their daily shopping and very popular with tourists who can get a great taste and look at a whole lot of local food in one, under-cover venue.

The Market Shed on Holland Street

Sunday morning?  The Market Shed on Holland Street is the place to go if you like local food and produce. Small scale producers, artisan products; food to eat there and supplies to gather up and take home. Bliss for a food lover. Most of the food is organic and there are lots of healthy options as well as a few indulgences.

We tried a breakfast pizza, made fresh in the wood fired pizza oven. The coffee was great and a green juice seemed fitting to balance it all out.

We loved staying at The Mayfair Hotel, Adelaide’s newest 5 star, boutique hotel, perfectly situated in the CDB and appointed beautifully.  We felt very well looked after by the friendly, genuine staff.

You will have finished your internship and gained general medical experience. A rotation in Emergency Medicine is preferred but not essential.
