Brisbane - Location Report

Quintessential Brisbane

Here’s our guide to a day in Brisbane – full of useful information if you are there to locum or stopping over on your way to the coast

Brisbane has 2 million residents, making it the third largest city within Australia and an exciting destination to explore.  Sydney has its harbour, Melbourne its port and Brisbane has its river.  On the north bank of the river is the CBD, with its sky-scraping offices; on the ‘South Bank’ is the artistic centre of Brisbane and famous as the home of the 1988 World Expo.  We’ll show you some of our picks on these two sides of the river, plus other areas nearby like Fortitude Valley and New Farm.

AM

Start your day on the South Bank and have breakfast/brunch at Gauge.  It opened this year and has a reputation for original, quirky dishes.  Gauge has no website, but can be found at 77 Grey Street.  From there head to GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) and see if you can spot any elephants standing on their heads.  Stop for a coffee in their ground floor café, which has views of the river and city.   Make time to enjoy the parklands on the South Bank and walk along the riverside walkway to see ‘The Wheel of Brisbane’.

MIDDAY

Book a river cruise and see the city from the water – some will even take you to a koala sanctuary!

LATE LUNCH

Back on dry-land in the CBD, walk to Queen Street Mall which is full of shops and a fantastic farmers market (perfect for lunch, but it only operates on a Wednesday).  For those looking for the most stylish shops, a visit to Queen St Plaza is a must.

Brisbane Markets

EARLY EVENING

James Street is in Fortitude Valley.  The hipster heart of Brisbane, full of creative speciality shops including fashion, health & beauty, lifestyle & design.  Wander around and see what gifts you can find to take home.  Hungry?  Try and get into Longtime Restaurant & Bar.  Incredibly busy, but it serves fantastic thai food (the chefs have cooked for the British and Thai royal families!).

NIGHTCAP

Head back to the CBD and have a cocktail in the small and intimate Laneway Bar.  As the name suggests, it is tucked away and not that easy to find!

WHERE TO STAY?

Our top picks are:

Ovolo Inchcolm - “distinctly boutique hotel of impeccable style and clandestine character”.

Spicers Balfour Hotel - “Located in the fashionable suburb of New Farm, Spicers Balfour Hotel is an award-winning boutique hotel just minutes from the Brisbane city centre. Step inside this iconic Queenslander and you'll discover a chic and stylish interior.”

How Prepared Are You For Application Season? Marcia's Top Tips

Our Prescript Quality Standards - PQS (1).png
My extensive experience of medical administration in several hospitals means I have seen first hand how the doctor shortage impacts regional communities. I am committed to helping solve this issue.

Hello – I’m Marcia Beere – Recruitment Partner at Prescript. It’s that time of year again where we start to see health services open the recruitment door for the future intake of 2020.

Applications seem like they are open forever, but in reality, with life getting so busy, before you know it you have until midnight to submit everything that you think is needed. I thought I’d share with you a few helpful hints to try and assist you in the last-minute scurry.

Applications seem like they are open forever, but in reality, with life getting so busy, before you know it you have until midnight to submit everything that you think is needed.

Perfect Your Resume

Update your CV - Include important details, such as; the rotations you have completed or are about to complete, research that you are helping to collect data for, teaching sessions that you have presented or provided assistance in presenting. All these things help a panel understand your interests and help them to visualise where you will fit into their department

Keep In Touch With Referees

It’s important to keep in contact with your referees. Make sure you have contacted them to alert them you will need their input. It helps if you can give them a rundown on where and why you have placed applications

Prescript - 2018 Feb_22679 crop long .jpg

Understand The Selection Criteria

It mostly seems unimportant when you are applying for a clinical role, but it is CRITICAL. When the positions are competitive and the volumes so high, the reviewing panel wants to know you have taken the time to review what you are applying for and that there is an interpreted understanding of the role and the tasks.

Connect With The Contact Officer

Most positions may not have a contact officer, particularly if they are bulk round applications. However, call the hospital and ask to speak with the JMO Manager or Director of Medical Workforce. Ask about the hospital and the training environment.

Not only do you become more than just a CV and selection criteria, but it will also give you a touch of insight into the culture of that organisation. Are they engaging? Are they willing to share information and show an interest in you? Will there be more opportunities other than this initial 12 months?

Be Flexible With Interviews

I get it; it is not always possible to be available at the exact time and date that you are requested for. However, there are few things to consider – you are in pool of a number of other candidates who can be available, constructing a panel of senior clinicians is also very complex and trying to reschedule their time is difficult.

Phone interviews are not the worst thing. Yes, it can be a challenge to strike up a rapport through the phone, but it is possible. Hospitals understand that it is a critically busy time with ongoing interviews around the country, and they will make allowances if they can.

anete-lusina-382329-unsplash.jpg

What To Wear

Appearance is important! Dress smart Be clean and tidy. Scrubs are fine if you are mid-shift or coming off/starting a shift (make sure they are clean).

Ask Questions

During your interview, don’t be afraid to ask questions about the unit. How busy does it get? What supervision is there? What are the majority of presentations? What are the teaching opportunities? Are there any research or ongoing audits you can be a part of in the department?

Quality Assurance

Hospitals are ever increasing in their demand for better health outcomes, no matter how small. Think of a time that you did something to improve an outcome. Did you research it? Did you organise for the department you were in to complete an audit and gather data?

Declining An Offer

If it wasn’t what you were looking for, the sooner you can provide a withdraw notice of a position, the better. Many hours and planning are put into any recruitment cycle and departments rely on knowing where their staffing numbers are up within a reasonable amount of time.

Prescript - 2018 Feb_22635 crop long .jpg

Be Yourself

Last but not least, be yourself, it’s so important to be you! You are your own best advocate.

Locum Diaries | A GP Obstetrician’s Adventures In WA & NT

I’m Marcia Beere - Recruitment Partner at Prescript Recruitment. I work with hospitals and practices across regional Australia to help them find the doctors they need.

At Prescript, we’re known for helping solve the regional doctor shortage in Australia. We love hearing about what our doctors have been up to while locuming in regional communities across the country.

We recently received some fantastic feedback and photographs from one of our GP Obstetricians about their locum adventures in WA and NT.

“I tell all my colleagues how happy I am with the service you provide, and this morning I realised I had probably not told you!”
— Prescript Doctor Feedback
The work here has been challenging, interesting and sometimes fun, here are some pics of flying out remote this week!

The team with Hugo and Stef really makes it easy so thank you. And especially to you (Marcia) for your support! I am very grateful.
— Prescript Doctor Feedback

The Australian regional doctor shortage is a widespread issue which has a significant impact on the healthcare of communities everywhere. Locuming in these locations will make a real difference.

Many Prescript doctors choose to complete several locums in multiple locations, often taking their families with them. We have had doctors in the past travel around the country with their partners and children while they locum in various hospitals and practices. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore some of Australia’s beautiful locations and spend quality time with your family while being able to maintain your clinical career.

So ask yourself, doctors, are you up for an adventure? Are you looking to earn a higher daily rate while exploring the country with your family? Would you like to assist regional communities in Australia? If so, we’d absolutely love to hear from you to explore locum options for you - tailored to suit your individual needs and preferences.
