Celebrating Prescript's Birthday - 8 Years of Solving the Regional Doctor Shortage

We are incredibly excited to be celebrating our eighth birthday and eight years of solving the regional doctor shortage at Prescript. We would like to take the opportunity to look back to our beginnings, significant milestones, and memorable moments along the way.

The Seed is Planted

Prescript had its beginnings back in 2009, after James Hill, Prescript’s Founder, went on a trip to the Northern Territory to see the work of the Fred Hollows Foundation. During his time there, he visited some remote indigenous communities and saw firsthand the lack of health care.

This really impacted James, and he could not shake the feeling that there must be a better way.

He kept coming back to the same question: “What can we do to make sure that everyone in Australia, no matter where they live, gets equal access to health care?”

That's where the seed of Prescript was first planted.

2015: Prescript Launches in Australia

Prescript officially launched in 2015 with a strong focus on helping solve the regional and remote doctor shortage in Australia.

“I always think back to that trip to the Northern Territory. I'm so proud to say that we now have Prescript doctors flying into remote communities across the country to give people the healthcare that they need.” - James Hill, Founder

significant MILESTONEs FOR PRESCRIPT

Prescript has come a long way from its humble beginnings at a kitchen table to becoming a leading medical recruitment company with a team of 15. Here are some of our standout milestones from the past eight years.

Opening of the Melbourne Office

After initially only being located in Sydney, the opening of a brand new office in a different state was a significant milestone for Prescript. After opening the Melbourne office in 2019, it is now a team of seven. Our Adelaide office followed shortly!

Remote Working

One milestone moment was welcoming our first-ever fully remote employee, Marcia Beere, who joined our team long before ‘WFH’ became popular. Marcia is Prescript’s Credentialing Team Manager and is located on her idyllic farm on the Bega Valley, NSW.

We have fully embraced the concept of hybrid offices and work-from-home options, enabling our team members to work remotely from places such as the Philippines, Bali, the UK, and Panama.

Launch Of Our Giving Program

One key milestone was setting our first Giving Goal of providing a doctor’s salary in Kenya for a whole year via our association with B1G1. Each time we help a doctor with the next step in their career, we also contribute towards improving health outcomes for people living in poverty overseas. Through the help of our doctors and health services, we have an audacious Giving Goal of providing 1 million days of clean water to rural families in Ethiopia.

ISO 9001 Certification

We are proud to have recently received the ISO 9001 certification. This milestone reflects our commitment to quality and standards and ensures that we continually meet and improve them. Our Operations & Leadership Manager, Stef McLaughlin, led the extensive audit of all our behind-the-scenes processes, and we were delighted to have passed with flying colours!

Prescript’s Locum Support Team

Another stand-out milestone was the launch of Prescript's Locum Support Team, which allows us to provide a high-quality and personalised service to our doctors and health services. Our Locum Support Team comprises Credentialing, Travel Concierge, Prescript Quality Standards, and Finance & Payments. The team takes on the burden of organising everything, making the locum process smooth and efficient.

memorable moments Along The Way

There have been so many unique and heart-warming stories over the last eight years. Here are some of our key memorable moments along the journey.

The Power Of ‘Yes’

A doctor saying 'yes' to a regional role is the only way the doctor shortage can be solved. We love hearing the reasons behind why a doctor says 'yes'. It is a powerful statement of hope that things will get better and seeing the ripples of positive impact that 'yes' has on communities far and wide.

One example of the power of 'yes' is the story of Dr Emily Vink & Kununurra:

Bridging The Gap

Shifting part of our focus onto Indigenous Health was a truly memorable moment for Prescript; we are proud to be positively impacting the lives of those who require it the most. Our efforts aim to bridge the gap in healthcare access and provide equal opportunities to all Australians, regardless of where they reside.

Telehealth

Telehealth has gone from being necessary due to Covid to being front and centre of healthcare delivery in Australia. GP appointments, geriatric medicine, and psychiatry consultations are just some ways this has become routine. Hard-to-reach areas are now benefiting from specialists available at a touch of a button, and Prescript’s telehealth & teleradiology division has been there to help make this happen.

Launching Our Rural Generalist Division

The division was established to provide healthcare services to in-need communities. We are unbelievably thankful for these rural specialist doctors who sacrifice so much going into regional communities, away from their homes and families, providing highly sought-after medical care, and being located in some of the most remote parts of Australia.

The Difference Doctors Make

Prescript’s mission is to solve the regional doctor shortage in Australia. There are many examples of how the doctor shortage has impacted people around Australia. One of our most significant moments is hearing how good healthcare truly transforms a community.

We love working with doctors who become part of our story and come on the journey with us to make an impact in regional and remote communities. They experience some great parts of Australia in locum placements, and the communities experience quality care.

Thank you for the ongoing support and dedication from our health services and doctors over the past eight years; we wouldn’t be where we are today without you. Here’s to the next eight years (and beyond!). - James Hill, Prescript’s Founder

Overcoming Doctor Burnout: Could Locum Work Be The Remedy?

Burnout is a common reason why many doctors feel exhausted and disengaged from their medical practice. Even if you are passionate about your work, burnout can lead to a lack of motivation and interest in your profession. As a doctor, it's crucial to avoid burnout as it can have serious consequences if you don't show up for your patients. So, how can you reinvigorate your work life?

One solution is to try locum work, which can help you tailor your work to suit your lifestyle while also expanding your skillset and experience. Locum work allows you to work in a completely different environment from your regular workplace and earn high daily rates. Depending on your aspirations, you might choose to work as a locum for a longer period of time, which could be a month or even a year. Alternatively, you could hop from location to location as a locum doctor to experience new people, places, cultures, and work settings.

5 key Benefits of Locum Opportunities

Whilst there can be challenges with locuming, such as being away from home or being somewhere new, there are many proven perks:

  • Be of Service to the Underserved

Prescript is known for solving the regional doctor shortage in Australia. While everyone needs services from doctors, some people do not get the privilege of receiving medical attention when they need it. There are chronic staffing issues where hospitals rely on locum doctors to keep their services running, and if it wasn’t for locum doctors, a large proportion of the country would be without healthcare. Your contribution makes a significant difference.

  • Experience Different Locations

Locums are a fantastic way of being able to travel to new, beautiful and unique locations that you may otherwise not have a chance to visit. There is a broad range of locums to suit your needs and preferences. From capital cities to major regional centers and rural communities, there is truly something for everyone.

  • Enhance Your Skillset

Working in new settings can significantly enhance your skillset as a doctor. Whether you're working in indigenous health settings, correctional facilities, or remote towns, you will gain valuable experience and expand your professional capabilities.

  • Excellent Daily Rates

Locum work often comes with fantastic daily rates, especially in more remote and regional areas. Whether you work as a full-time locum or on an ad hoc basis, you can boost your income while providing communities with the healthcare they need.

  • Overcome Burnout

As mentioned previously, locum work is a great way to overcome burnout. Burnout can make you feel like you've fallen out of love with your career, but it's important to remember that burnout is just a period of exhaustion, and you can overcome it. When you have the freedom to experience different locations and offer services to those in need, you will realise the significance of your medical practice.

Prescript’s Exclusive Locum Opportunities

Locuming is a fantastic way of enhancing your skillset, experiencing new places and people, and resetting and falling back in love with what you do. By changing your location and daily routine, you can reinvigorate your career and reignite your passion for it.

Take a closer look at our exclusive locum opportunities and the financial, professional, and lifestyle benefits they offer. You can rest assured you will have the opportunity to change your environment, explore, gain diverse professional experiences and enhance your doctor career.

Inside Story: A 5-Star Locum Doctor Journey

Like much of the world, Australia is experiencing major challenges regarding its healthcare workforce. The numbers are clear: Australia's doctor shortage is growing and will only worsen unless solutions are found. These shortages will be particularly acute in regional and rural areas, putting increased pressure on health services to attract doctors.

Locum doctors can be critical in providing short-term support. However, with so many health services competing for the attention of doctors, more and more hospitals are turning to outside experts to help them manage their recruitment.

Companies like Prescript are critical in ensuring that regional and rural areas can find the doctors they need.

Doctors receiving a professional service that is molded to them is vital for their careers, and ultimately results in happy health services, fulfilled doctors, and communities having the healthcare they need. Everything Prescript does is with this in mind.

Dr. Freda O'Neill’s Locum Journey

Dr. Freda O’Neill, a GP Emergency VMO, had experienced locum work previously and decided she needed a more tailored experience that suited her skillset and lifestyle.

Dr. O'Neill connected with Prescript Recruitment to find the opportunities that she was looking for. According to Dr. O'Neill, "From my first point of contact with Prescript, I realised this is a recruitment agency with a difference: they provide a personalised service, with everything tailored to my specific requirements/desires."

Personalised Locums for Doctors

Mel Houston, Prescript's Senior Recruitment Partner, worked closely with Freda to identify locums that met her needs. The recruitment team at Prescript has years of experience finding doctors' amazing positions.

Mel Houston said, "Freda was looking for interesting locations, supportive environments, no nights and on-call, and a good work-life balance for shifts. Freda wanted to enjoy and explore the places she's working in."

Freda loved the service Mel had provided. When speaking about her experience, Dr. O'Neill reflected, "My agent Melissa Houston is incredible. She seems to have the inside line on all the hospitals! Excellent communication skills; nothing is too much trouble. I thrive on the flexibility and improved work-life balance that locuming permits. I have seen parts of Australia that I would never have had the opportunity to visit otherwise. Locuming allows me to experience vastly varying work environments, which can be extremely challenging. Still, I have always been game for a challenge and am becoming increasingly adept at adapting to new workplaces & protocols."

From Start to Finish

Our credentialing and logistics team ensured that we completed Dr. O'Neill's paperwork before she started her locum. This advanced preparation limited the administrative burden on her and ensured she had everything she needed to get started.

Dr. O'Neill found the process smooth and efficient: "Prescript has a great working relationship with the administration staff at the various hospitals, which makes my life significantly easier. Almost all the paperwork is done by Prescript, which takes the stress away from the doctor – usually, this creates a massively time-consuming headache for doctors when locuming. Having worked with multiple other agencies over the past few years, I am acutely aware of Prescript's exceptional service."

Happier Doctors means A Better Experience

In the end, Dr. O'Neill was thrilled with her experience, noting that Prescript gave her a chance to locum at unique and interesting locations that provided her with the flexibility and the chance to experience the locum life she always wanted.

"Most recently, I have spent six weeks working in Broome in WA. This has been quite testing from a clinical point of view, but I have gained multiple additional skills and increased confidence. On top of this, I have made several new friends and have plenty of time off to check out the Kimberley Region and its impressive scenery. Quite the contrast from my hometown of Dublin in Ireland! I thoroughly enjoyed the last seven months and cannot imagine returning to work permanently at a GP clinic! I look forward to continuing to work with Prescript and many new exciting experiences!"

Mel Houston found that Dr. O'Neill's experience benefited the doctor and the health services she served. "Prescript is delighted to work exclusively with Freda for her locum opportunities. She is always a pleasure to work with and has had many successful locum experiences in Grafton, Maclean, Port Macquarie & Kempsey, and Broome. The health services she has locumed for absolutely love her and immensely appreciate her fantastic work for their communities. We look forward to partnering with Freda for many more locum positions in the future!"

Welcome Jason Ahmad | Senior Recruitment Partner for Radiologists

We are delighted to welcome Jason Ahmad to the Prescript Recruitment team! Jason is our Senior Recruitment Partner for Radiologists - permanent and locum.

Before joining our team, Jason has spent many years working with clinicians and across a number of sectors, including pathology, hospitals, medical indemnity, and medical recruitment.

Jason is driven professionally by being able to create positive and meaningful health outcomes in rural and regional communities.

“I’m hoping to positively impact regional communities by placing appropriately qualified doctors into areas where there is a significant need.”

Jason sees many opportunities for growth in the medical industry. He is particularly interested in seeing the barriers faced by International Medical Graduates lowered to facilitate their registration with the Australian Medical Board.

“As a cohort, they offer a very real solution to the enduring rural workforce shortage. I feel as a country we have the resources and technology to do this without compromising patient safety.”

When we asked Jason about the contribution he would like to make in his role, his response was in line with his motivations:

“Every time Prescript places a doctor in a regional area, whether it be permanently or for just a few days, there are tangible positive impacts that ripple out into the community that benefits the health service, the doctor and the communities they serve. Being a part of this process is amazing.”

Outside of work, Jason is personally driven to encourage and support his two sons whose development is his greatest aspiration. We also hear he likes a game of pool from time to time amidst his family commitments.

HOW TO CONTACT JASON:

Jason is based in Adelaide, South Australia. If you are in the city and would like to grab a coffee, get in touch with him!

I am responsible for our giving relationship with the Global Giving Business initiative, B1G1. (I am also Prescript's Operations & Leadership Manager). I keep track of our daily business activities and carry out the behind-the-scenes bits and pieces to ensure that our giving is linked and processed.

I then share that impact – how many days of water is given - with our Prescript team, the doctors, hospitals, and health services we work with, and anyone who will listen! 💧

What is B1G1?

B1G1 is a Global Giving Business Initiative originally called 'Buy1Give1'. They have a mission to create a world that's full of giving.

Unlike conventional giving models, B1G1 helps businesses achieve more social impact by embedding giving activities into everyday business operations and creating unique giving stories.

We have a fantastic partnership with B1G1, and I love working with the team there. Each time I speak with Paul Dunn, B1G1's co-founder, I feel energised and inspired to continue doing good in the world. 💧

How did you decide on the giving goal of 1 million days of clean water access?

We decided on the giving goal as a team during one of our planning days together a couple of years ago. There are SO many incredible projects facilitated through B1G1, and it wasn't easy to choose.

In the end, we decided to focus on the water projects in Ethiopia because being able to access safe drinking water is a fundamental human right. 💧

Tell us more about it; how does it all work?

The projects we support fund the construction of hand-dug wells in the Ethiopian province of Tigray. The projects also included training & education in health and sanitation and family planning.

However, things have shifted a bit. Over the past 18 months, the region of Tigray has been subject to dreadful civil unrest. Devastatingly, thousands of the water points have been damaged or rendered non-functional.

So, although our giving goal was initially to help with brand new hand-dug wells, the contributions are now to repair damaged wells (or build new ones where possible). 💧

What do you love about the giving project?

I love that regardless of what has been happening in the world, we have been able to continue giving and making positive outcomes overseas. The pandemic has had many ups and downs, but we have continued our relationship with B1G1 and the water project. 💧

How do you feel about reaching the 650k milestone?

Thankful and joyful! And it is all because of the wonderful doctors and health services we work with. Prescript links our day-to-day business activities as a medical recruitment company to our giving goal. 💧

Giving examples:

When a hospital or practice confirms a doctor in a locum or permanent position in regional Australia = Prescript donates

When a doctor refers another doctor to us = Prescript donates

When a doctor registers as a new candidate with Prescript = Prescript donates

When a doctor completes a reference for another doctor = Prescript donates

When a hospital or practice agrees to work with Prescript on a long-term vacancy = Prescript donates. 💧

What next?

We will keep going! It's now more important than ever that we help the communities in Tigray. We want to reach 1 million days of water donated.

We'll keep you updated on the news from the Tigray province and any information we receive about wells, their repairs and clean water. 💧
