Career Advice

Meet James Hill | Prescript Founder & Recruitment Partner

James.png
I believe for you to partner with the right medical recruitment agency, that reflects your wishes and lifestyle choices, is so important. Prescript’s focus is on what matters most to you, whatever stage of your career, your location or your future plans.

Every day the team at Prescript help doctors take the next step in their career and assist regional hospitals and practices across Australia with their long-term (permanent) and short-term (locum) vacancies.

We’re known for making for regional communities feel like they have the best doctors in town.

I’ve chosen Australia as my home and I’ve loved getting to know different places - from small towns to larger cities - and exploring the challenges that their health services face. Over the past decade I’ve helped hundreds of doctors relocate from interstate or abroad to help regional Australia move towards being fully staffed with doctors.

The struggles that remote communities face in receiving consistent high-quality healthcare are widely talked about. I’ve travelled to the NT and seen for myself the remote Aboriginal communities that lack healthcare provision. What might surprise you though is that the problem is also much closer to home. Even a short distance outside of our capital cities, the doctor shortage is very real. The point is that this is not just an issue just for those living outside of Sydney or Melbourne, it’s a problem for all of us when we travel across Australia to enjoy regional holidays or visit family and friends.

From countless meetings with doctors, hospitals and practices over the last 12 years we understand that they have three key challenges:

✖️ They don’t have the time to add finding a new position or recruiting to their daily tasks.

✖️ They struggle to identify the best position or attract the best applicants.

✖️ They know that promoting themselves or a vacancy so that it is engaging and relevant takes time yet they want immediate results.

We offer a range of recruitment services that will solve these challenges:

Firstly, Prescript’s 7-Step recruitment framework on behalf of doctors, hospitals and practices for permanent positions – putting recruitment on the top of our list and off theirs.

Secondly, Prescript’s locum management service – providing immediate support for uncertain or busy times.

Thirdly, bespoke retained or exclusive recruitment searches and projects.

We believe that regional Australian hospitals and practices should be fully staffed with doctors so that communities everywhere have the healthcare they deserve. Everything we do is with that in mind. We are committed to helping solve the problem of attracting doctors and get an immense amount of satisfaction from seeing the end result - departments and clinics that run better, have more capacity, improved morale and less stress. We also strive to place doctors where they’ll feel valued and really enjoy what they do.

Through 2019, our goal is to provide 10,000 days of Medical Care to children in the slums of India. Diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria and rabies are rife. The provision of medical services helps to reduce the mortality rate and allow children to thrive under extreme conditions.

O&G and Medicine Recruitment Partner | Prescript's Interview with Marcia Beere

Prescript - 2018 Feb_22635 crop long .jpg

Hi, I'm Grace Clueit, I look after Vacancies, Marketing and Communications at Prescript Recruitment. I spoke with Marcia Beere to get the inside info on her role as Recruitment Partner at Prescript. I found out more about her experience and how she plays a leading role in helping O&G and Medicine doctors with the next step in their careers.

Marcia recruits for locum and permanent positions across regional Australia with a focus on Medicine and O&G. Marcia has worked in medical recruitment for ten years, in both hospital and agency settings.

What path did you take to get to Medical Recruitment Partner?

Marcia: New Zealand born, following a typical overseas experience in the UK, I moved back to Australia in the early 2000's and quickly established myself into a medical administration role via a temping agency. At the time the hospital was short-staffed and needed someone who had the ability to look at a problem and fix it. I enjoyed the problem-solving side of it and found being part of the candidate pathway from junior to consultant very fulfilling. I love being able to provide that strong support during critical points in peoples lives.

Being able to help hospitals stay fully-staffed and helping meet that community demand was my primary motivation to get into the full recruitment side. I also love the people contact. It’s so rewarding listening to the needs of both candidates and clients, tailoring positions to suit individual needs, and then being able to bring it all together.

What do you see as big issues within medical recruitment right now?

The biggest issue that we are helping to solve is the shortage in regional areas. It’s a consistent problem across the whole of Australia, excluding Sydney and Melbourne, and it is why we exist as an agency. Living in a regional area myself, I have seen the impact of the doctor shortage. It is continually challenging for hospital networks and I feel very privileged to be able to provide support and energy in addressing some of these challenges.

rudi-strydom-3768-unsplash.jpg
What are you doing differently for O&G and Medicine doctors?

I'm very specific in my approach and ensure I take the time to find the right roles to suit the right people, specifically avoiding the ‘one size fits all’ approach. I instead opt to spend more time making sure everything has been done properly and to the highest standard.

Quality over quantity is definitely something I focus on. As a company we won’t just partner with ‘anyone’ and we take our time to provide a bespoke, personalised service. The proof is in the meaningful, long term relationships that we’ve created with both candidates and clients alike.

Did you know…?

Marcia lives in Bega, the rural heartland of the Sapphire Coast, and also the home of Bega Cheese! When she’s not helping rural hospitals find the doctors that they need, she’s looking after her family and working on the farm with her cows, what a woman!

stijn-te-strake-316914-unsplash.jpg

You’ve been working in medical recruitment for a long time now, do you have any predictions for the future careers of doctors in Australia?

While working in health care facilities, we would look forward to a tsunami of doctors to flood through our hospitals. For whatever reason, we’re not seeing these extra doctors translate into extra staff, at least not in the regional areas where the demand is increasing. I am a tree-changer who moved from the city to the fields of a regional centre and I am not unique in this change. Many people are choosing to relocate away from the hustle and bustle of a city and enjoy what the regional centres have to offer. It is great to be able to help grow the services by placing doctors in some of these areas.

This is something where there isn’t just one simple fix and the problem isn’t going to go away anytime soon. Having more medical graduates is one factor in reducing the shortage of doctors of course but there are other factors too. Many of these graduates will end up as specialists in cities and working in private practices but that doesn’t help with the shortage in public sectors in regional areas

What do you enjoy / what frustrations do you have about your role?

I enjoy having long term relationships with people and really getting to know them – both doctors and clients. Seeing doctors progress through their career and working with clients for such long periods of time is great. I don’t think that I’d have the same kind of ongoing relationships if I were working in a different industry.

Knowing that I work for a passionate company, who wants to make a difference is an amazing feeling and is truly demonstrated through our interactions with candidates and clients. I continue to enjoy the field that I have invested a lot of time into and being able to carry that on is a real honour.

One frustration I tend to encounter is dealing with bureaucracy and working within not one, but multiple public health systems that all have their own idiosyncrasies. For example, if you are credentialed to work full time in one state health service, that doesn’t mean you are credentialed to work as a locum in that same state health service, and instead need to almost start as if the candidate is a brand-new person within the system.

This is one of the wider frustrations of working within health – everyone feels it. It is, however, something that is there for a positive reason and it’s important that these procedures are in place to protect doctors and hospitals.

Lifestyle Features

Melburnians' reputed obsession with good food and coffee appears to be true - that's said as a compliment and with great admiration.  For anyone who loves to wine, dine and explore the best in cafe culture, a visit to Melbourne is sure to leave you very well satisfied and planning your next trip back.

As well as the culinary appeal, there are wonderful arts and cultural activities; cutting-edge shows, sporting events, world-famous shopping, hidden laneways and vibrant markets, plus the simple pleasure of walking around a very pretty city taking in the old and new architecture and absorbing some of the history in the layers of this city - Australia's second most populous. There's so much to see and enjoy in Melbourne.

Melbourne is a very easily navigable city. Perfect for walking around the compact grid which makes up the city centre. The quintessential Melbourne Trams are free to hop on and off within the main city grid borders which makes it simple and fast to traverse the trips you may wish to take on your exploration. It's also a perfect (almost flat) city centre to walk around - this is the very best way to discover the hidden laneways, one of Melbourne's most engaging features.

To take trams or buses or trains outside the CBD city circle grid, simply pick up a Myki card, and you're off.

Melbourne bridge and water.jpg

FURTHER AFIELD

There is the chance to explore the city and perhaps further afield too. There are stunning wineries in areas including the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula and the chance to stop in some lovely country towns to enjoy a tranquil lunch and take in some Australian country history - perhaps take a drive to the Dandenong or Macedon Ranges.

There are incredible coastlines to explore close to Melbourne too. If you want to add a few memorable days on to a trip to Victoria, you can include the Great Ocean Road, an Australian National Heritage listed stretch of road, of approximately 240km that runs along the south-eastern coast of Australia between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Allansford.

We have written our own location reports to share with you which are full of great things to do and see. Call or email Rebecca Doyle (Prescript’s Senior Recruitment Partner for Radiology) to find out more:

Medicare Provider Number Applications - Changes to the Process

Stef Medicare blog.png

Did You Know…?

There’s a new form for provider number applications. Medicare has recently updated their manual application form and will no longer be accepting the older versions.

What’s Different?

The layout has changed, and there are several more questions about the location than there was before. This means that more information is needed up front, and the risk of the application being rejected is higher. The good news is that the document is fillable online; however, printing is still required as a handwritten signature is mandatory.

The Answer? PRODA!

In view of the changes, and with all the headaches caused by ensuring provider numbers are ready in time, you should register with PRODA now, more than ever before.

The online system is linked with the Health Professional Online Services (HPOS) and allows you to apply and retrieve provider numbers instantly! And what a relief it is when the number is issued in plenty of time before a locum or permanent placement.

What Is PRODA?

Provider Digital Access (PRODA) is an online authentication system providers use to securely access government online services. Using a two-step verification process, you only need a username and password and access to a personal mobile phone or email account.

To access services using PRODA, you need to register as an individual to get your own account.

What Do You Need To Do?

Follow this step by step guide to obtain additional location provider numbers instantly:

1. First, you will need to register with PRODA

  • To register, click on this link here.

  • A web page will open with a detailed process of your next steps:

  • Create your login details and personal details

  • Verify your identity. You will need three pieces of identification (Passport, Driver’s Licence and Medicare card are easiest to verify, but other ID is accepted)

  • Match your existing services to your profile

2. Secondly, apply instantly for additional location provider numbers

  • Once you have registered, you will then be able to apply online for instant provider numbers.

  • You will be given the required location address and banking details in advance.

Need help applying? I am happy to talk through the process over the phone. Give me a call, or you can call the HPOS team directly on 132 150.
