Doctors - Why You Need Professional Help

As a doctor working in a close-knit professional network, you may think that you can rely on job boards and who you know to find your next position. However, there are several reasons why you should think twice before embarking on a solo job hunt.

Prescript Recruitment specialises in connecting you with the best opportunities available. Here are several great reasons to let us help you find your next locum or permanent role:

The power of anonymity. Prescript’s ‘explore first, apply later’ method allows you to canvass the market anonymously.  We will find out all the details that you want to know about an opportunity before you decide to make a formal application. In a network as intimate as healthcare, you will want to be discreet about your intentions to move on – particularly where your current employer is concerned.

Take advantage of our large network. As medical recruitment specialists, we are perfectly placed to find you opportunities in great places to work across the whole of Australia. You can engage Prescript on a retained assignment where we will tailor the search to find you exactly what you are looking for.

Let us negotiate for you. Do you love everything about the job that you just interviewed for but think that your skills and experience justify a higher salary or larger equity share than is on offer? As well as a great daily rate for your locum work, do you also want holiday-style accommodation for you and the family? Prescript can negotiate all of this with your prospective employer on your behalf.

Outsource your admin. There is a lot of admin involved with applying for and starting a new locum or permanent job. Luckily for you, admin is one of our specialties. Helping you write a great CV or tweak your existing CV, applying for additional provider numbers on your behalf (and chasing up with Medicare as needed), helping you with credentialing paperwork, writing your invoices, chasing up your invoices for payment, organising travel arrangements, getting your IT logins set up before you start work – these are just some of the ways that we can help to make your life easier.

The best things in life are free. You can engage Prescript to find you job opportunities and it won’t cost you a cent. It is in our best interests to not only find you the best opportunity that we can but also to provide you with an unparalleled level of service that will make you want to use us again in future and refer us on to your colleagues and friends.

Prescript Recruitment was founded specifically for Doctors. Our mission is to partner with you throughout your career, finding you rewarding locum and permanent positions across Australia.

We are Open - you create, update and own your own profile.

10 Questions That Can Help You Organise Your Next Locum

You’re a Doctor; you want to find a great locum position in a great place, but you’re busy and overwhelmed by the process.  Here’s our 10 questions to ask when organising your next locum position:

  1. Dates:  What dates do they need you for? Does it match your availability?
  2. Location: Can you get there easily?  Will it be one site or multiple?
  3. Financial: What daily rate is on offer? Most workplaces have a fixed rate for their locum doctors and it is not normally a reflection on your individual experience.
  4. Payment Method: How will you be paid – via invoice or PAYG? Some workplaces cannot pay you via invoice, so make sure to check in advance.
  5. Insurance coverage: Will you be covered by their policy or will you need your own? It is important you seek independent advice on what will be best for your situation.
  6. Flights:  Are return economy flights paid for?  Will they book on your behalf or will you book and be reimbursed? Is there a price ceiling or do you have to seek approval before purchase?
  7. Car:  Is a hire car provided?  Who books it?  Will it be pre-paid or will you be reimbursed?
  8. Accommodation:  How many bedrooms do you need?  Will the accommodation be self-contained?  Is it resort style with a swimming pool or more business like?  How near is it to your workplace?  If you are working multi-weeks is the accommodation paid for the weekend?
  9. First day details:  What time should you turn up?  Is there parking onsite?  Who should you ask for?  Will you be given your IT login details in advance?  Will someone be there to help you show you around and set you up?
  10. Work expectations:  Have you been clear on your skills and does it match what they need?

Hopefully by asking these questions, your next locum will go smoothly and with no surprises!

Is Your Comfort Zone Really That Comfortable?

Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes

When I opened the doors of Prescript, it was the end of a process which began as a “one day I’ll set up my own business” daydream, grew into a workable idea and then finally into my very own company. This was the end of a slow journey, which in hindsight had taken far longer than it should have done to come about.

What was it that had been stopping me? I had over 10 years’ experience in recruitment, with 5 of those years being focused on Radiology. I knew what I was doing. I'd built excellent relationships with the clients and candidates that I worked with. People trusted me to do a good job. I was getting a lot of satisfaction out of my job - helping radiology clinics to solve their staffing issues and helping radiologists find the next step in their career. I enjoyed my work.

But what about the next step in my career? Despite the fact that I had the skills, expertise and desire to set up my own company it hadn’t happened and seemed unlikely to happen. Why? It all boiled down to fear. Fear of the unknown. Fear of stepping outside of my comfort zone.

“The greatest fear in life is not of death, but unsolicited change.” ― Raheel Farooq

I had many conversations with my friends and family who were unanimously in favour of me starting my own business as they were convinced that I would be a success. Despite this, my self-doubt continued to win me over.

Fear of financial insecurity and of failing in plain sight of everyone I knew were the barriers to me taking action. It got to the point where I had talked myself into a corner – either I had to take action and actually start the business, or work for someone else as I had done all my life and put my dream of being an entrepreneur on the shelf forever. Luckily, pride meant that I had to put my money where my mouth was!

We all fear change in one form or another, across many aspects of life. Although our comfort zone is comfortable, it is unlikely to be perfect and there are no doubt better places to be if we can dare to take the necessary steps. The idea of a comfort zone being a place, like a comfy chair by the fire, is an illusion. In fact, you are your comfort zone. It’s an idea created by you. In order to move forward, you need to step outside yourself. Stepping outside into the unknown is awkward and uncomfortable.

"But nothing changes if nothing changes."

Perhaps you are in a bad relationship but you fear being alone? Maybe you’ve always wanted to be able to play the piano but you worry that you have no musical talent, it’s too late, and you won’t be any good? Or maybe you feel bored and stifled in your current job but you worry that there’s nothing better out there or if there is something better out there, you won’t be able to get it?

For me, it was a case of overcoming the self-doubt and anxiety that I had about leaving a steady job to start up on my own. I had to get out of my own way and push forward into the uncomfortable, scary unknown. Has it been easy? No way! Has it been worth it? Absolutely!

By moving outside of my comfort zone, I’ve been able to begin a whole new chapter of my life. I have discovered many new opportunities, made new friends, and I have unleashed a creative and entrepreneurial spirit that had been lurking within me for years.

Trying new things, putting yourself out there and risking failure isn’t easy but that’s what makes it worth it.

Think about where you are now compared with where you’d truly like to be. Is your comfort zone really that comfortable after all? Maybe now is the time to take stock and take a risk. It could be the change you’ve been waiting for!

If you feel like now’s the time to get off the comfy chair and step into the unknown, you don’t need to do it alone! Get in touch with Prescript to discuss how we can help you embark on your next adventure.

James.

Help! Nightmare Interview Question.

"WHY DO YOU

WANT TO WORK

FOR US?"

Radiology Recruitment

Help! Nightmare interview question “why are we your dream company to work for?”

What happens in an interview when you can do the job, but you’re not sure what you think about the company?

Have you ever been in this situation before?   You are actively job seeking and you see/hear of an opportunity that ticks some of your boxes.  You’re intrigued to know more.  You can’t get hold of a hiring manager to discuss your suitability, so you rely on applying directly or via a recruitment company.  Before you know it, you’ve been invited in for an interview.  In the interview you try your absolute best and they love you - congratulations!  But hold on, you’re sure you can do the job, but you’re not sure on the company.  Does this sound familiar?

I’ve been there myself.  Liked the look of an online advert.  Phoned/enquired for more info, none really forthcoming, so had to apply through the designated process.  Next stage is finding myself sitting in front of an interview panel having to answer their questions about why working there was my dream goal.   Perhaps I’m too polite/English for my own good, but it didn’t feel right to promote my skills and suitability for the role and yet appear lacklustre about the organisation.  Cue lots of indignation down the track, “but he seemed so keen?”  The worst example was an interview for a contract role (while I was setting up Prescript Recruitment).  It was for an immediate start and l was interviewed the same day that I applied.   I successfully got through the interview, proved my ability to do the position and confirmed my availability to start the next day.  Last question was “What do you know about our company and why do you want to work for us?”  Bear in mind this was for a one week contract.  I was truly at a loss for words.  I’d not heard of their company until that day and had no ambitions to join their company long-term.

So what went wrong?

Today, in certain sectors, the competition for good people is fierce.    Unless you are Google/Macquarie Bank/Twitter, please don’t expect every candidate to have a burning desire to work for your organisation at the first interview stage.  Absolutely, they need to demonstrate they have done adequate research. Absolutely, you should not hire anyone permanently unless they have proved their enthusiasm to work for you.  What I’m saying, is that at first interview stage, please recognise it is a two way process.  The candidate is deciding if they want to work for you, just as much as you are deciding if you want them to join the team.  It is up to you to sell the opportunity – great candidates want to be wooed.

What can be done to improve this process?

In one word ‘information’.  Look at your recruitment process – do candidates have adequate opportunity to rule themselves out prior to interview?  Can they talk to someone knowledgeable?   If you are using a recruitment company, have you briefed them properly?  If you are the interviewer, can you spend time making the company sound enticing to the candidate?   Do expect the candidate to prove their ability, but don’t expect them to see your company in the same light that you do.    Hook their interest in the first interview and by the second interview their commitment will be firmer, more genuine and then you can ask the really hard questions!

What do you think?

Is a Radiology Locum Right For You?

WHAT IS A

LOCUM POSITION?

PRESCRIPT Q&A

Prescript Radiology Recruitment

A lot of doctors have questions about locum positions.  To help, welcome to the Prescript mini Q&A:

What is a locum job?

A locum position provides temporary coverage.   This could be because regular staff are away or just that extra support is needed.  In these circumstances radiology clinics & networks rely on locum doctors.  It provides the flexibility to cover most schedules. You can fill in for just a week or cover for someone’s long term absence.

Is a locum position right for you?

Yes!   Working in a locum position is a great way to earn extra income.  Your daily rate as a Radiologists should be between $2500 and $3500 per day (+ GST).

How does it work?

Introduce yourself to Prescript Recruitment.    We have vacancies in all locations for different durations.

Where would you go?

If you’d like to, you can travel the country or you can choose to stay close to home.

How long would you work?

A locum position can be as short as a day or you could commit to several months, even a year!

Why is there such a range?

Radiology clinics & networks need your help when they are short-staffed, to give support during a crisis, or just to fill in when staff members take time off.

So what do you have to do?

You simply tell Prescript what works for you.  We will get to know your skills profile, what you need and any personal requirements (are you bringing your family/dog/cat; do you prefer an exit row seat on the plane; automatic or manual hire car etc.).

Clients across the country trust Prescript Recruitment to help them fill their vacancies.  So when we think there’s a good match, we will contact you about a locum position.   Prescript helps manage the credentialing, travel and accommodation.  It’s our job to take care of you.

To sum up:

Locum work is a great way to increase your income.  It can build your network and career.  Positions can even go back to back to create employment all year round.  It really is up to you.

Prescript Recruitment - Our Quest To Go Paperless

IS GOING

PAPERLESS

POSSIBLE?

QUEST TO GO PAPERLESS

When setting up Prescript I thought about the headaches doctors traditionally felt during the recruitment process.  What frustrations did they encounter?  How could Prescript make the hiring experience simpler and more efficient?   What changes could be made for the better?

One big issue is paperwork.  There is a huge amount.   Yes, a lot of it is important.  Engaging a doctor involves several layers of verification and checks to ensure patient safety.  However, most processes are not candidate/doctor friendly.   They involve reading multiple attachments, printing off forms, filling in with a pen and then returning via fax or scan.  It can be an old-fashioned, time-consuming and off-putting experience.

TOWARDS A SOLUTION

I decided to try and make Prescript's  interaction with doctors as paperless as possible.  When you register as a job-seeking candidate with Prescript, you will be able to click on a link that will enable you to provide all the necessary information online.  This means you can, within 10 minutes, create a candidate profile, upload any documents and answer screening questions without leaving your computer/phone.  No need to print.   No need to use a pen.  No need to fax or scan.

It has not been easy to go totally paperless, it is very much a work in progress.   While Prescript as a company is heading in the right direction, I am still a big fan of using paper to make 'to-do' lists.  If I am speaking to clients or candidates, I find it easier to make notes with a pen before typing them up.  Slowly though, I am finding new ways to work - apps like Wunderlist help replace paper lists.

So does this mean you'll never have to use your printer when dealing with Prescript Recruitment?  The answer is 'maybe' at the moment.   Each locum you do in different locations will have their own site or health department specific paperwork requirements - some will be online, but others you still might need to print, complete, sign and scan back.

Over to you.  What do you think about Prescript's quest to go paperless?  Have you registered as a job-seeking candidate with us?  What did you think of our online candidate profile forms?   Please comment below or connect with us by clicking the button 'Candidate Contact'.

Thank you.
