What Do Radiologists Earn In Australia?

Let’s talk money!

Whilst it’s not the only consideration when contemplating locum or permanent work, it’s a subject that we think should be open, transparent and easy to communicate about. So many radiologists ask us for remuneration discussions, and this is absolutely something we like to offer so that you can feel informed and clear.

Here’s Prescript’s overview of both permanent job salaries and how they are packaged – Plus information on locum daily rates.

Locum Radiologist Positions

What can you expect to be paid?

Generally, you will be on a daily rate – This mainly ranges from $3000 - $3500 + GST, and up to $4000 per day offered where there is a particularly urgent or difficult to cover vacancy or where a high-level, specialist skill-set is required. Locums are usually Monday to Friday roles with no weekend or on-call requirements. If there is an option for weekends or on-call, this will be clearly offered.

There are also specific locums that offer $4000 + GST per day with additional payment for on-call requirements and weekend work. These are generally high-end, Tier B interventional roles.

For all locum roles available, we will talk you through the expectations and provide you with all relevant information prior to booking so that you are 100% happy and confident.

What are the inclusions?

Here’s a quick summary of what will typically be included in your locum.

The planning, logistics, credentialing and bookings will be managed with you by Prescript’s Credentialing Team, Stef McLaughlin and Marcia Beere. Their focus is to make locums easy, stress-free and time-efficient for you.

✓ Return economy flights for the radiologist - If required, dependent on location.

✓ Self-contained accommodation provided, we aim to secure the best, most enjoyable stay available. We also like to know if you are taking a partner/family with you so that we can find a suitable scenario and update on any nightly caps to be taken into account.

✓ Car hire provided OR your own car reimbursed at the ATO per km rate.

Note: We will inform you if medical indemnity insurance is provided or if you will need to provide your own (most commonly the case).

How will you be paid?

Fortunately, we have our fantastic Prescript Finance Manager, Hugo Scales, who has the wonderful quality of bringing a personal touch to the financial side of things. Hugo makes it simple and easy and ensures you’re paid promptly after your locum has finished.

Most of our locums are paid via invoice and their own business structure, often a PTY Ltd company – This is something Hugo is on hand to discuss to make sure that you have the best business structure in place, and that you are paid in the most suitable way for your personal circumstances.

Next steps to securing a locum

The first step is to give our Prescript Recruitment Partner (Nicola Speer) a call or email. I will listen to your needs and interests, look at your available dates and location preferences and align these with your clinical skill set so that you can opt-in to the best locums for you.

Permanent Radiologist Positions

How can you best navigate your way into a new permanent role? What are some of the key factors in making your decision? Here’s some information that we hope will help:

How much can you earn?

Great question! This is where we consult, discuss and negotiate the very best package to suit your wishes and also align with your prospective employer’s structure.

Across Australia, remuneration models within both the public and private sectors vary tremendously. For example, it may be a straight salary model; or a salary plus bonus structure. Others have a base salary and percentage of billings – or combinations of these, plus sometimes the option to buy into the business with equity or shares.

This may at first seem somewhat challenging to navigate. With this in mind, our approach at Prescript is to listen to your particular requirements, discuss and analyse the various options with you to find and secure your perfectly aligned role.

For those looking for a role as a newly qualified FRANZCR, we specialise in this. We also work with radiologists requiring a DWS or AON role, as well as established FRANZCR radiologists from across Australia, NZ and globally.

As well as remuneration, these discussions will include other important factors such as lifestyle, location, promotion and career development prospects, options for equity and anything else that’s pertinent to your individual scenario.

Please reach out and have a chat!

Remuneration Options.

Here’s a quick overview of some possible remuneration options you may be offered:

Daily rate models (similar to a long term locum) – Approximately $3000 - $3500 per day

Salary – Range can be as broad as approximately $550k pa - $750k+ - Potentially with percentage or performance bonus attached

Percentage of billings model – with or without base salary – Approximately 18-22%

Total annual income, depending on all these factors, can be from $500 - $700k - $800k – $900k - $1,000,000k+

*PLEASE NOTE: If part-time work appeals, this is often a feasible option – Please do ask us. (e.g. 1-4 days per week)

Note on Public Hospital Roles.

The public hospital paid roles, or “Staff Specialists” are governed by a state health award, and the salary packages are usually significantly lower than in private sector sites.

Remuneration packages in public hospital paid jobs can range from about $250k (e.g. NSW Health Staff Specialist, Year 1) to about $500k (in WA, QLD or SA) - depending on location, seniority and experience. Different states have different awards – We can go over this with you.

Sometimes, the option of a split public/private mix role is a good scenario for some radiologists.

Location.

This plays a big part – Regional areas sometimes offer a more generous package than some of the city locations that traditionally have less trouble attracting radiologists to permanent roles.

State by state remuneration can vary, but generally, it’s more closely related to the particular employer and region.

Prescript has roles throughout Australia’s capital cities, large/medium/small centres, towns/cities, regional, coastal and inland locations – It’s great to have all the options!

Did you know? Many opportunities are not advertised, others are, but the actual nuances and flexible options that can be tailored are not always apparent. It’s so worthwhile to have a chat, find out more so you’ll be informed and able to decide you decide on a permanent move, locums or teleradiology.

Key Criteria

Below is an overview to give you a starting point for planning your questions and clarifying your priorities.

What key criteria really matter to you when taking a new permanent role?

Contemplating a move to a new job doesn’t need to be stressful or full of unknowns. Here are some points we will discuss with you in a consultative, open process to help you clarify your priorities, and help us narrow down the best step forward into a new position.

Clinical fit Does the role match your skills/modalities and your career goals?

Workload and conditions ➝ What is the expectation? How flexible is the opportunity for part-time options or for your particular style of working?

Location Do the locations match up to be a great place for you to live and work?

Community and facilities Is this a community that you can really enjoy and that fits the needs of you and your family? (Ask us about schools, community and cultural groups, sports and recreation and leisure activities too.)

Start date ➝ Is there flexibility on when you can start? Will you be supported in the move here? (NOTE – Always check your notice period for your current role and any restrictions in your contract and let us know this too)

Long term prospects➝ Is this role secure? Is there growth opportunity?

Money Let’s talk openly about remuneration structure and realistic, bottom-line earnings that you can expect. How can we help tailor this to your preferences too?

We build long term, trusted relationships with doctors and radiology providers. It’s always the number one goal to offer the best possible outcomes based on your wishes.

So, let’s talk! Locums? Permanent role? Teleradiology? – Call or email anytime.

I’m here to listen to and help you with information and the best positions for your personal scenario. (*Discussions are confidential so you can rest assured of your privacy when making contact.)
