Urgent Tiwi Islands Indigenous Health GP Locum - 19-30 June 2023
Are you in search of a new adventure and an opportunity to immerse yourself in a captivating culture? Prescript has an urgent and exciting locum for a General Practitioner to assist a health service on the stunning Tiwi Islands, situated 70km off the shores of Darwin. Dates are available from 19-30 June, but this locum won’t be available for long!
The Tiwi Islands are an enchanting destination that offer a unique cultural experience and breathtaking natural beauty. Comprised of two main islands, Bathurst and Melville, the Tiwi Islands are known for their rich Aboriginal heritage, vibrant art scene, and pristine landscapes.
The Position
As part of the team in Julanimawu (Nguiu), your role will involve providing primary care and public health services to the residents of the Wurrumiyanga community and nearby outstations. The DMO Service and medical retrievals offer clinical support, while the Royal Darwin Hospital provides tertiary care.
This is a two-GP position, ensuring continuous support during your tenure in the area. Working Monday to Friday, with no weekend or public holiday obligations. Please note that ED cover is not required, as the focus is primarily on primary healthcare. PHC Nurses and Aboriginal Health practitioners are the initial responders on-call.
One of the highlights of a visit to the Tiwi Islands is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local Aboriginal culture. The Tiwi people have a deep connection to their land and traditions, which are beautifully showcased through their art, music, and ceremonies. You can visit art centers where you'll witness talented artists creating vibrant paintings, intricately carved wooden sculptures, and traditional textiles known as "pukamani" burial poles. Engaging with the locals and learning about their cultural practices is an unforgettable experience.
Nature enthusiasts will be captivated by the unspoiled beauty of the Tiwi Islands. From golden sandy beaches to lush rainforests, the islands are a haven for wildlife and outdoor activities. Take a guided tour through the dense forests, where you'll spot unique flora and fauna, including wallabies, crocodiles, and an array of bird species. If you're lucky, you might even witness the mesmerising sight of nesting turtles along the pristine shores.

About Mel Houston
Hi, I'm Melissa Houston; I am one of the Senior Recruitment Partners at Prescript Recruitment, working with rural generalists and emergency medicine doctors across metro and regional Australia.
My experience covers over a decade of medical recruitment, specialising in senior doctors and solving the healthcare shortage.
I am an expert in working closely with hospitals, departments, and clinics to fill their critical vacancies. My success has included roster management, executive search projects and in-depth relationship building with locum doctors.
I love to work hard whilst injecting humour and fun into my day-to-day activities. I really enjoy meeting clients and doctors; as it stands, I think I've ticked off 100 hospitals that I have visited, and that is probably only touching the surface. I believe it's integral to matching doctors’ and clients’ needs and helps me better understand doctors' new roles.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my daughter and family. I'm a water baby at heart, so you'll often find me out on our family boat - sailing the beautiful waters of the Mornington Peninsula (where I live!).
