While In Broome

Pearl Industry: Broome has a significant historical connection with the pearl industry. Pearling has been a major economic activity in the town since the late 1800s when Japanese, Malay, Chinese, and Indigenous divers harvested pearls from the surrounding waters. Today, Broome pearls are still highly regarded and sought after worldwide.

Cable Beach: One of the most famous attractions in Broome is Cable Beach, a stunning 22-kilometre (13.7 miles) stretch of white sandy beach with turquoise waters. It is a popular spot for sunsets, camel rides, and water activities.

Staircase to the Moon: Broome is also known for a natural phenomenon called the "Staircase to the Moon," which occurs during certain times of the year. It happens when the full moon rises over the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay, creating an optical illusion of a staircase leading to the moon.

Indigenous Culture: The Kimberley region, including Broome, is home to various Indigenous Australian communities. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Yawuru, Nyul Nyul, Bardi Jawi, and other local Indigenous groups.

Horizontal Waterfalls: One of the unique natural wonders near Broome is the Horizontal Waterfalls in Talbot Bay. These are a pair of stunning tidal waterfalls created by the rapid tidal movements in the region. Visitors can take boat tours to witness this breathtaking phenomenon.

Broome Historical Museum: For those interested in the town's history, the Broome Historical Museum offers insights into Broome's pearling past and the region's diverse heritage.

Broome Bird Observatory: Birdwatchers will appreciate the Broome Bird Observatory, which offers opportunities to observe a wide variety of migratory birds that flock to the area during certain times of the year.

About Mel Houston

Hi, I'm Melissa Houston; I am one of the Senior Recruitment Partners at Prescript Recruitment, working with rural generalists and emergency medicine doctors across metro and regional Australia.

My experience covers over a decade of medical recruitment, specialising in senior doctors and solving the healthcare shortage.

I am an expert in working closely with hospitals, departments, and clinics to fill their critical vacancies. My success has included roster management, executive search projects and in-depth relationship building with locum doctors.

I love to work hard whilst injecting humour and fun into my day-to-day activities. I really enjoy meeting clients and doctors; as it stands, I think I've ticked off 100 hospitals that I have visited, and that is probably only touching the surface. I believe it's integral to matching doctors’ and clients’ needs and helps me better understand doctors' new roles.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my daughter and family. I'm a water baby at heart, so you'll often find me out on our family boat - sailing the beautiful waters of the Mornington Peninsula (where I live!).
